Researchers are now in agreeance there is a strong link between stress responses in dogs, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. Dysbiosis (dis-by-o-sis) is a reduction in microbial diversity in the gut which can then trigger an inappropriate immune system response. This response affects the emotional reex by causing an inappropriate response to stress. This in turn heralds a decline in emotional stability, a negative response to training, plus an increase in behavioral volatility.
